ITS Draft Statement of Values
Background
This document began as a brainstorming exercise using colored post-its. At a retreat in June of 2008, the Senior Management Team in the department spent some time writing down words that described the ITS department as we wanted it to be. We then pasted them up on a board and clustered them according to different topics. There was an amazing amount of synergy in the words and the thoughts behind them. Enough, in fact, that I was able to take each of the clusters and produce a paragraph using the words from each cluster. A draft of that work is below:
Text
Information and Technology Services (ITS) is committed to being an essential part of the future success of UNC Charlotte. We believe that the following behaviors and characteristics are essential to that success.
The ITS mission should be aligned with the University's mission of teaching, research, and service. We should actively seek opportunities on our campus and in our community to accomplish the overall goals of the University. As good stewards, we should be accountable, resourceful, and open about our use of University resources. We believe that it is our duty to advocate for the care and maintenance of the University's information technology infrastructure in support of the mission.
ITS should be an exemplar for excellent customer service. We should listen to our customers, be receptive to their ideas, and remain relevant to their success. We should also be proactive in providing solutions for research, teaching and learning, and in transacting the business of the University.
ITS as an organization must be adaptable, dynamic, and customer focused. As a learning organization, we should not only be creative and willing to take risks on behalf of our clients but also be quick to acknowledge our mistakes. Our approach to our work must be thorough, while retaining a spirit of innovation and an insistence on accountability.
The ITS environment should be inclusive, interesting, and fun. We support a workplace where everyone can learn and grow. We encourage our staff to be passionate about what they do. We must respect each other's ideas, care for one another, and nurture the organization as a community.
ITS must continually earn the trust of our partners throughout the University. We will be good listeners, actively seeking feedback and responding appropriately. We intend to accomplish our mission through collaboration and respect-based influencing.
ITS has an essential role in the overall success of UNC Charlotte. We will fulfill this role through strategic thinking that leads to our being responsive to the University’s needs, adaptable to its situation, and accountable for its resources.
Notes
The text above represents the collected view of the Senior Management in the department. We gathered feedback at the September 2008 staff meeting, analyzed the comments and re-worked it. This remains a work in progress. The first draft of Value Statement comments have been posted.
