Objective
Production use of lecture capture during Spring 2009 term.
Goals
- Focused on one discipline: ENGR, Tech.
- Applies only to capture in Smith 202
- Make the images available in Blackboard
- Content access securely (no content showing up on YouTube)
- Technology transparent to faculty
- Data archival parameters will vary and will be decided by Project Sponsor
- Production “live” date is 1/12/2009
- Includes 12 classes, <7 instructors, 40hrs of capture per week.
- Conduct pedagogical evaluation at end of term
- Recording set to ‘web quality’
Discussion Issues
Student Support
- In order to properly view the content, the user needs to have the Silverlight plug-in installed on their browser. This is not currently standard on the lab images and will not be available for the Spring Semester. Most students are non-traditional and will be viewing the content from off-campus.
- Engineering has developed an FAQ type of document for students based on the experience last semester. They will work with Steve Clark to get it updated and share it with CTL and our student computing help desk.
- For the pilot project students needing support will call the ITS student help desk. We will make best efforts to address the issues that come up, based on the documentation that we get from Classroom Support and engineering.
Content editing
- Content editing will be done by faculty. Classroom support will not do content editing. The Mosaic group may do so at their discretion.
Podcasting. No plans to deploy podcasting at this point. Training
- We did not discuss training in sufficient detail. There are still some significant unresolved issues. There were discussions about needing to instruct the faculty (and students) in several different areas in order for the pilot to be successful.
- Software Operation
Content Editing
- Classroom management (movement, repeating questions, etc)
- Recording disclosure notice
Authentication
- Panopto now supports the use of secure LDAP for authentication. Carter’s team will try to get it working with the Panopto server this week. This will prevent the creation of non-synchronized accounts on the Panopto server which might be problematic later. This applies only to the faculty members using the service.
- Steve Clark will create an account and default password for each class. Once a student clicks on the link in BB, a new window will be launched and the user will be asked for the class account and password.
Storage size
- There were concerns about retention period of the files, due to the storage available. This issue was not resolved. Steve estimated that an hour lecture is about 100MB for an hour. We could have as much as 640 hours of content recorded over the period of the semester. Mosaic team will need to purge the local storage (1TB) periodically and ITS will have to watch the server storage as well.
Live Streaming
Not supported in current version. May be considered in follow on projects.
Ownership
We had a discussion about the intellectual property issues related to the storage of this content. No resolution on the issue other than for Steve to talk with Craig Berlin on his experiences in recording lectures.
Action Items
- Steve Clark will talk to Craig Berlin about the notification provided to students prior to their being recorded.
- ITS will bring up a Pre-production VM and a Development VM for Panopto.
- ITS will monitor OS level functions on the production server (disk space, CPU utilization and ?) through Groundworks. Email alerts will go to Steve Clark.
- ITS will work to get the LDAP authentication complete prior to the end of this week. Backup plan is for Classroom Support to create individual accounts for faculty.
- Mosaic Group will forward rough draft of Student FAQ to Classroom Support.
- Jack Stein will forward a public copy of his Panopto System Installation documentation to Steve (DONE)
- Jay will set up the next meeting for two weeks from today (in progress)
- ITS will integrate the Panopto server into its change management routine.
- This was not explicitly stated, but a discussion between ENGR, Classroom Support and CTL about training for faculty should be held as soon as possible.
- CTL to work with Jack Stein regarding the nature of the pedagogical evaluation for the course.
